The river under the moonlight and the god of desire

In a distant place, there flows a river named the Mekong. This river not only nurtures the land along its banks but also carries countless stories and legends. Hidden within a lush forest is an ancient village, home to a girl named Adela. She loves life and enjoys sharing every little moment with her parents, especially during sunset, when they sit by the river and admire the beauty of golden sunlight shimmering on the water's surface.

One peaceful evening, with a gentle breeze rustling the leaves, Adela sat by the riverbank with her parents, enjoying fresh fruits harvested from their garden, while the sweet aroma of homemade fruit wine wafted through the soft evening air. Adela’s father, Raya, was a fisherman in the village, and her mother, Ivy, was a skilled weaver. They were undoubtedly her greatest support and love in her life. In these moments, Adela always felt an immense happiness, as if she could hear nature whispering to her to cherish the people and things around her.

"Adela, do you know?" her mother Ivy asked with a smile, her eyes shining with maternal love. "In our culture, there are many ancient legends, and these stories are not only interesting but also teach us many lessons about life."

"Yes, Mom," Adela perked up, her eyes sparkling with curiosity. "Can you tell me one of those stories?"

"Well, let me share a tale about greed. In ancient Greece, there was a deity named Bitarde, who had a magical golden heart. His heart could only hold greed, and his desire for money and wealth became insatiable. Therefore, even though he possessed countless treasures, he still felt unsatisfied, always wanting more, until he ultimately lost his most precious possessions—friendship and love."

Adela listened intently, gazing at her mother’s face, and for a moment, she seemed to see the image of that deity, struggling between greedy desires and the fear of loss. At that moment, Raya interjected, "This story teaches us that when we pursue more material wealth while neglecting our loved ones and friends around us, what we ultimately gain is just emptiness."

"I understand, Dad," Adela nodded, a warm feeling welling up inside her, making her cherish everything in front of her. At that moment, she had an idea—to record such a lesson, perhaps to pass it on someday in the future.

"How about we create a poem together tonight?" Adela suggested, gripping her parents' hands tightly, her eyes shining with anticipation.

"That's a great idea! We can write today’s story into a poem, making it a belief for our family," Ivy agreed joyfully, then took out her weaving tools to carefully weave these precious moments into a beautiful ribbon.

The three of them began their creative journey. Adela envisioned the imagery in her mind and wrote on the ground: "Cherish those around you to truly have happiness." Then she extended this phrase into poetic lines, gradually forming a rhythmic poem with the suggestions and inspiration from her parents.

"Let’s read it out loud together!" Adela exclaimed, and as her voice was carried by the gentle breeze, it rippled along with the waters of the Mekong, becoming the most beautiful melody under the evening sky.

"Cherish those around you, forsake greed and calculations, and you'll savor the essence of life, reaping peace in your heart." Their voices were like a clear spring, resonant and beautiful, echoing endlessly, like the harmony of water and wind.

At that moment, a colorful bird flew by, its wings creating a melodious tune, seemingly responding to their verses. Adela excitedly pointed to the bird, "Look! It's so beautiful! This must be a good omen for our creative process!"

As the evening sunlight gradually faded, the stars began to twinkle in the night sky, and Adela's heart was filled with joy in creation. At this moment, she realized that envying others' wealth and glory would not bring her happiness, but having sincere family and friendships was the greatest treasure.

"We should continue creating and weave this poem into the ribbon tomorrow," Adela proposed. Thus, the three of them, in mutual understanding, agreed on the glory and anticipation of the following day. They sat closely, sharing warmth, tightly connecting their hearts.

Throughout the long night, Adela dreamed beautiful dreams about friendship and love. In her dream, she and her parents were creating poetry beneath the brilliant starry sky, filled with happiness and anticipation. And it seemed the stars in the night also silently watched over them, witnessing this genuine bond of love.

In the days to come, Adela's poetic spirit continued to thrive within her, as she experienced the beauty and preciousness of life with her parents. Frequently, as she grew older, she would stand by the Mekong River, reminiscing about that warm evening, still able to feel the freedom of the colorful bird soaring above and the profound lessons from Greek mythology resonating in her heart, reminding her to cherish the happiness in front of her.

Thus, Adela grew up by the river and gradually became an outstanding poet in the village, often using her poetry to teach the young villagers to find their true selves in the flashy world and maintain a simple and sincere heart. Whenever she saw children playing by the river, she would think of her parents who had accompanied her growth, and her heart would be filled with warmth, for she knew that true happiness lay in sharing every beautiful moment with those she loved most in life.

And Adela understood that in this world, mutual trust and support were the real treasures. In this way, the story was passed down by the Mekong River, becoming an eternal memory in people's hearts.
